Albright awarded state energy grant
HARRISBURG, Aug. 30 – Albright College will be able to dramatically increase energy efficiency and reduce greenhouse gas pollution on its campus through an $846,000 state grant, according to state Rep. Dante Santoni, D-Berks.
Santoni said the Pennsylvania Energy Development Authority met Friday to approve the grant for Albright, which will help the college install a combustion turbine that will include a waste heat recovery boiler. The system will allow for the on-site production of power combined with the recovery of waste heat, a system that will effectively utilize 80 percent of the energy in the fuel. Normal utility generation is only able to use 35 percent of a fuel's energy.
"This grant is a win-win for the university, its students and the community as a whole," Santoni said. "Not only will it help Albright save on energy costs, it will allow the college to reduce its carbon footprint by 43 percent."
The system will be installed at the Albright Cogen Plant.
PEDA was established by the legislature in 1982. It awards grants and loans for a variety of energy-related projects including solar, wind, geothermal and other clean and renewable sources.
