HARRISBURG, Jan. 26 – State Rep. Tom Caltagirone, D-Berks, chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, said the committee today approved five bills, sending them to the full House of Representatives for consideration:
House Bill 1095, introduced by state Rep. Jesse White, D-Washington/Allegheny/Beaver, would amend current law to provide guidelines under which damages may be awarded in death actions and expand the scope of damages.
House Bill 1444, introduced by state Rep. Matthew Bradford, D-Montgomery, would allow an attorney to argue for specific damages to be awarded in a lump sum payment or mathematical formula in a civil trial.
House Bill 2123, introduced by state Rep. Paul Drucker, D- Chester/Montgomery, would invalidate all agreements to arbitrate disputes between patients and health-care providers made before an injury occurs.
House Bill 2133, introduced by state Rep. Josh Shapiro, D-Montgomery, would clarify the offense of trademark counterfeiting. Under the bill, a person commits the offense if he/she knowingly and with the intent to sell or to otherwise transfer for profit any items or services bearing or identified by a counterfeit mark.
House Bill 2202, introduced by state Rep. Mike Gerber, D-Montgomery, would amend the state's wrongful death statute to expand the recoverable damages to include an award for mental anguish and sorrow.
