Central Pennsylvania African American Museum honors Caltagirone
READING, Feb. 12 – State Rep. Tom Caltagirone, D-Berks, has received an award from the Central Pennsylvania African American Museum for his dedication to and support of the museum.
The museum, for which Caltagirone helped to secure $1 million through the state’s Redevelopment Assistance Capital Grant program, honors African-American culture and educates the public about the struggles and triumphs of African-Americans throughout history.
A registered landmark, the museum houses information and artifacts about emancipation, discrimination, the Underground Railroad, slave ships, slave life on plantations and the Civil Rights movement.
“It has been an honor working with local members of the African-American community to convey their deep history and message of hope,” Caltagirone said. “The museum was once a stop on the Underground Railroad and is a source of education and culture for the community. Being involved in its plans from start to finish has been a truly rewarding experience.”
Caltagirone was honored last year by the Reading branch of the NAACP for his commitment, support and concern for the African-American community in Reading and Berks County.
