Kessler: Alternative-energy investment in budget good for Berks

HARRISBURG, Feb. 5 – State Rep. David Kessler today released the following statement commenting on the governor's proposed 2008-09 budget:

"I was pleased that the governor is backing a major investment in energy independence, but I am disappointed that property tax relief was not a focus.

"Investing in alternative energy would put us ahead of other states in competing for quality jobs, both in that leading-edge industry and retaining and attracting other jobs that would be drawn here by the promise of a reliable, homegrown fuel supply. I am especially encouraged by the potential of biodiesel, which offers a significant advantage to farmers in Berks County and across the state. Unlike ethanol, biodiesel has a byproduct – feed – that goes back to the farmers.

"Having an added, stable source of farm income from supplying the biofuels industry would also help local efforts to preserve farmland from development in fast-growing areas of Berks County."
