House adopts Mann resolution urging continued federal funding for community police program

HARRISBURG, June 30 – State Rep. Jennifer Mann, D-Lehigh, said a resolution she sponsored requesting continued federal funding for a community police program was adopted by the House today.

The resolution (H.R. 536) urges President Bush and Congress to provide adequate funding for the federal Community Oriented Policing Services Program. COPS was created in 1994 under the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act. More than 117,000 police are involved in the program, which focuses on reducing violent and nuisance crimes through patrol and other traditional law enforcement methods, prevention efforts and community partnerships. The president’s 2008-09 budget proposal would eliminate COPS grants.

"Increased gang activity and nuisance crimes like vandalism indicate a continued need for this program," Mann said. "The president needs to be made aware that many communities rely on COPS to cut down on crime and make neighborhoods safer."
