Mann: Home Heating Assistance Program Opens Nov. 2

HARRISBURG, Oct. 28 -- Pennsylvania's Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program, which helps low and moderate income families pay their heating bills, will begin accepting applications soon for the 2009-10 winter heating season.

"Thousands of Pennsylvania families face the uncertainty of not being able to pay their heating bills this winter, and I urge my constituents to contact the Lehigh County Assistance Office LIHEAP program bureau for help," said state Rep. Jennifer Mann, D-Lehigh.

The program has two components. The first provides cash grants to families to help pay regular monthly heating bills. You do not have to have an unpaid heating bill or be on welfare to receive assistance, and no lien is placed on your home. The cash grant component of LIHEAP will begin accepting applications on Nov. 2, 2009.

The second component of LIHEAP provides crisis grants to families that are facing heating emergencies. These emergencies can include broken heating equipment or leaking lines that must be fixed or replaced; a fuel shortage, or termination of utility service. The crisis grant portion of LIHEAP opens Jan. 4, 2010.

Both programs will run through March 15, 2010 or as long as funds remain available.

Applications are available from the Lehigh County Assistance Office LIHEAP program bureau by calling (610) 821-6509. If you or someone you know needs help, please call.

For more information, or an application, visit the LIHEAP Web site, or contact my office.
