Brennan: May 1 is deadline to file FAFSA

HARRISBURG, April 21 – State Rep. Joe Brennan, D-Lehigh/Northampton, is reminding area college-bound students that the deadline to file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid to determine financial aid eligibility for the 2008-09 school year is May 1.

Brennan is encouraging students and their families to file the FAFSA as soon as possible.

"The FAFSA is used to determine if students qualify for a State Grant, federal Pell grants, student loans and other types of financial aid," Brennan said. "Most private scholarship programs and universities base their financial aid decisions on the FAFSA, as well, so it's imperative to file it on time if you are planning to attend college in the fall."

Brennan said all students should file a FAFSA, even if they believe their families earn too much to qualify for aid. Almost all students end up qualifying for some type of financial aid, he said.

Brennan said students and families can visit www.pheaa.org/fafsa to access the online FAFSA and worksheet. The site will help walk families through the application process step by step. Students can also file the FAFSA online at these Web sites: www.educationplanner.org or www.fafsa.ed.gov.

Students are encouraged to file the FAFSA online if possible. The U.S. Department of Education prefers online applications, and it is an easier and faster way to file for students. Students who do not have Internet access and who need a paper FAFSA may request one by calling 1-800-433-3243.

More information about the FAFSA and other financial aid opportunities in Pennsylvania is available online at www.pheaa.org.
