Brennan: Pennsylvanians to see school property tax relief
HARRISBURG, May 1 – State Rep. Joe Brennan, D-Lehigh/Northampton, announced today that slots gaming in Pennsylvania has generated enough revenue for area homeowners to share in nearly $613 million in school property tax relief this summer.
"I'm very pleased that homeowners in my district are receiving this relief," Brennan said. "Property tax has long been an issue, and it's refreshing to see this progress."
Brennan said homeowners can go to www.pde.state.pa.us/proptax to find out what their reduction is based on the school district in which they reside.
Brennan also said homeowners should note that the relief allocation will be reflected in their school property tax bills and will not come in the form of a check from the state.
Gov. Ed Rendell signed the Taxpayer Relief Act in June 2006 to provide school districts with the means to lower school property taxes for all homeowners.
Brennan said this is the first year of slots-funded relief and that since more gaming revenues are expected to be available next year, the amount of relief should be even greater.
"In addition to gaming money, however, I continue to look for ways to further reduce property taxes," Brennan said.
For more information on the Taxpayer Relief Act, Brennan said residents can visit the Pennsylvania Department of Education's Web site at www.pde.state.pa.us/proptax.
