Appalachian Trail measure approved by Senate

HARRISBURG, May 20 – The state Senate has approved legislation, sponsored by State Rep. Bob Freeman, D-Northampton, that would require municipalities bordering  the Appalachian Trail to adopt, implement and enforce zoning ordinances as part of their responsibility to protect it.

The House is expected to vote on the measure (H.B. 1281) when it reconvenes in June.

Freeman said a law enacted in 1978 requires bordering municipalities to protect the trail as a state scenic, historic and aesthetic treasure. But they are not required to enact ordinances to do so. This legislation would ensure that the trail is protected from development or any other activity that would hamper its aesthetic appeal in any way.
