Lehigh Valley lawmakers recommend local judge
for state Supreme Court
HARRISBURG, Sept. 28 – Several state representatives from the Lehigh Valley have written to Gov. Ed Rendell to recommend that he nominate Northampton County Common Pleas President Judge Robert Freedberg to replace retiring Chief Justice Ralph Cappy on the Pennsylvania Supreme Court.
The letter, signed by state Reps. Bob Freeman, Joseph Brennan, Jennifer Mann, Craig Dally, Richard Grucela and Steve Samuelson, highlights Freedberg’s long career in law and suggests he would be an “excellent appointee” to the state’s highest court.
“Judge Freedberg is a highly respected and talented member of the judiciary,” the legislators say in their letter. “His vast and varied experience has given him insights into all aspects of the legal profession.”
Freedberg received his law degree in 1969 from the Columbia University School of Law and has served as president judge of Northampton County Common Pleas Court since 1991. He began his first 10-year term on the court in 1980 and was elected to his second 10-year term in 1989. From 1989 to 1991 he was administrative judge of the Domestic Relations Section. He was retained for a third term in 1999.
Before his election to the bench, Freedberg had a private law practice and served as a municipal solicitor and an assistant district attorney.
Cappy’s retirement, announced earlier this month, is effective at the end of the year. Rendell will appoint a replacement to fill the rest of Cappy’s term, which ends in 2009. The appointee must be confirmed by the state Senate.
