Grucela legislation would drop telemarketing calls at work

HARRISBURG, Jan. 15 – A private residence isn’t the only place where unsolicited telemarketing calls are not welcome. Under new legislation state Rep. Richard Grucela, D-Northampton, introduced, businesses also would participate in the state’s Do Not Call List.

“Businesses are often contacted by telemarketers, and those interruptions are an inconvenience and disrupt business operations,” Grucela said. “Unfortunately, they are not eligible to participate in the state’s Do Not Call List. I believe Pennsylvania businesses should also have the right to avoid unwanted telemarketing calls, and to participate in the existing Do Not Call List.”

In 2003, Pennsylvania residential and wireless telephone subscribers were given the opportunity to avoid unwanted telemarketing calls by registering for the newly created Do Not Call List. According to the Pennsylvania Attorney General’s Office, more than 1 million residents registered in a single two-week period that year, and millions more have registered over the past several years.

“This program has been overwhelmingly successful in reducing unwanted telemarketing calls for residential telephone customers, but the same cannot be said for business telephone subscribers,” Grucela said.

Residential and cellular phone customers can continue to register for the state's Do Not Call list at 1-888-777-3406 or visiting online www.pahouse.com/Grucela. Registration for the Do Not Call list is free.
