Grucela: Local residents to receive above-average property tax relief

HARRISBURG, May 6 – State Rep. Richard Grucela, D-Northampton, said that slots gaming has generated enough revenue for Northampton County homeowners to share in more than $15 million in school property tax relief this summer.

Grucela explained the amount of relief will vary by school district, but homeowners in the 137th Legislative District are expected to see cuts above the state average of $190. The relief will show up as a reduction on homeowners' property tax bills.

"We’re starting to see the payout from the casinos, and Northampton County came out ahead," Grucela said. "At a time when everything seems to be going up in price, it’s good to have something going down. More than 28,000 households in my district will get the reduction in property taxes they have been calling for, and as gaming revenue continues to grow, we can expect that the reductions will be greater in the future."

The estimated tax relief per homeowner in the 137th Legislative District is as follows:

ü  Bangor Area School District homeowners  – $294;

ü  Easton Area School District homeowners – $215;

ü  Nazareth Area School District homeowners – $218.

In 2006, Gov. Rendell signed the Taxpayer Relief Act, which Grucela voted for, to provide school districts the means to lower property taxes for homeowners.
