Melio comments on state budget

HARRISBURG, July 7 – State Rep. Tony Melio, D-Bucks, released the following statement on the 2008-09 state budget, which was signed into law July 4:

Education

"Education is always the cornerstone of every year's budget. This year is no different. Programs that have proven successful over the years like the Accountability Block Grants and Classrooms for the Future will continue to prepare students in the Bristol Township and Neshaminy school districts for their educational future."

Energy

"I am pleased that we decided to take action to invest in homegrown sources of energy and put aside funding to help us as a state become more aggressive with energy-saving practices. This budget is about investing in research, development and production of renewable energy sources."

Economic Development

"We're going to see vast improvements in the infrastructure of the state. Critical repairs and new development programs will keep our state up and running in the right direction. Bridges will be repaired, railways will be improved and damaged dams will be rebuilt as part of Rebuild PA."

Health care

"An important component of the budget is the health and welfare of Pennsylvanians receiving benefits through Medical Assistance. Both inpatient and outpatient coverage received funding boosts in this budget. Also, residents of Bucks County receiving long term care through this program, whether it is in nursing or community-based services, will see benefits through the funding increases.

"The new balanced budget is a responsible spending plan with no tax increases."

Melio is serving his 11th term in the state House representing the 141st Legislative District, which includes parts of Bristol and Middletown townships in Bucks County. Constituents are invited to contact his Levittown office at 3611 Green Lane. The phone number is 215-943-TONY (8669).
