Rep. King’s Harrisburg Update

Since being sworn in as a state representative in January, I have been active in the reform movement. I was the first representative to testify and offer proposals before the Speaker’s Commission on Legislative Reform, which was created by new House Speaker Dennis O’Brien. The commission presented its recommendations to the House on March 12 as H.R. 108. After two days of debate, the House adopted sweeping reform measures that increase our openness and accountability to the public. For a comprehensive list of reforms, please visit my Web site: www.pahouse.com/King.

Now that the reform measures have been adopted, it is time to move forward on the proactive agenda put forth by the House’s new Democratic majority. Party leaders are empowering committee chairmen to take on a number of the state’s most challenging issues. For example, the Commerce Committee will examine priority issues like mortgage foreclosures and credit card interest rates; the Consumer Affairs Committee will consider topics such as cable competition, home improvement contractor regulation, and rate caps under electric deregulation; and the Finance Committee will look at the governor’s business tax reform recommendations and additional property tax reform.
