King introduces bill to freeze property taxes for senior citizens
HARRISBURG, May 5 – State Rep. Chris King, D-Bucks, introduced legislation (H.B. 2502) today that would freeze property taxes for senior citizens who meet certain age and income guidelines.
"It’s important to ensure that seniors who have paid taxes their entire lives have relief against inflation that could force them to sell their homes," King said. "My bill provides property tax relief as a way to keep seniors in their homes while still being able to contribute to the local tax base."
To qualify for the rate freeze, senior citizens 65 or older would have to have a household income of $55,000 or less. Property taxes would freeze at the rate they are assessed the year the homeowner turns 65.
King noted that all Pennsylvania homeowners will begin to see school property tax relief this summer due to slots gaming revenues. His new legislation would serve as a supplement to that relief for seniors of low and moderate incomes.
