King votes to approve 2008-09 state budget
HARRISBURG, July 4 – State Rep. Chris King, D-Bucks, said today that he is pleased with the priorities outlined in the 2008-09 state budget passed today.
The final budget package boasts a substantial $11.4 million increase in Pre-K Counts, a program established last year by legislation King authored, and calls for a 3 percent increase in state education funding for Neshaminy schools.
Legislation originally authored by King is also part of this year's budget package. King's legislation to create a Volunteer Firefighter Tax Relief Law so that volunteer responders could apply for a state income tax credit based on their firefighting service during the year, originally introduced as H.B. 905, was passed as part of another bill (H.B. 377), and is included in the budget package that is expected to become law.
"I'm very proud to have had my own legislation passed as part of the budget package for two consecutive years," King said. "Now that I've accomplished my goals to give back to our first responders and invest in our students, I can continue to work on other priorities, including health care and property tax relief."
King also noted that the 2008-09 state budget makes significant investments in renewable energy initiatives that will create jobs, reduce the state's reliance on foreign oil and make Pennsylvania a leader in the energy sector.
