Gerber seeks candidates for new program at Pa. military college
HARRISBURG, March 18 – State Rep. Mike Gerber, D-Montgomery, is currently seeking a worthy student from his legislative district for participation in the Valley Forge Military College Legislative Appointment Initiative.
In December, the Pennsylvania House adopted a resolution (H.R. 565) to recognize Valley Forge as Pennsylvania's official military college and create a legislative appointment program at the school.
For the 2010-11 academic year, a student seeking admission into the LAI must have a minimum SAT score of 1000 or a 21 on the ACT and an overall high school grade-point average of 2.5. Candidates should also exhibit involvement in sports or other extracurricular activities, demonstrate leadership potential and be service-oriented.
Students chosen to attend Valley Forge through the LAI will receive a $9,000 scholarship under the program. Gerber said the school will also assist in facilitating other financial aid options.
Residents who would like to recommend a worthy student can contact Gerber's constituent service office at (610) 832-1679. Gerber said interested students can submit a short essay outlining their academic and extracurricular achievements and explaining why they want and deserve to be appointed for the program.
Founded in 1928, Valley Forge is a co-educational two-year transfer college located in Wayne, about 15 miles west of Philadelphia.
