New statewide smoking ban law signed today in Ambler
AMBLER, June 13 – State Rep. Mike Gerber, D-Montgomery, and state Sen. Stewart Greenleaf, R-Bucks & Montgomery, today hosted Gov. Ed Rendell and fellow lawmakers at a signing ceremony for the new statewide smoking ban law at the Ambler Theatre.
"This is a monumental day in Pennsylvania. Senator Greenleaf, Governor Rendell and I worked hard together for more than a year in true bipartisan fashion because we firmly believe that with this ban we will be a healthier society, will save millions of dollars in our health-care system and will likely see a rise in revenue in the hospitality industry," Gerber said.
"Some say nothing good comes out of Harrisburg without a fight. Well, this was one hell of a fight and I'm just glad we won."
Under S.B. 246, there will no longer be any smoking permitted in the vast majority of workplaces, including restaurants, most bars and all nightclubs. Gerber said he believes lives will be saved as a result of the new law.
Senate Bill 246 passed the House on June 4 by a vote of 163-38. The Senate passed the bill Tuesday, 41-9. The new law will take effect in 90 days.
