Leach resolution honoring Israel passes House unanimously
HARRISBURG, Feb. 5 –The state House Monday unanimously adopted a resolution sponsored by state Rep. Daylin Leach, D-Montgomery, to commemorate the 59th anniversary of the birth of Israel.
The Leach resolution, H.R. 24, pays tribute to members of the National Council representing the Jewish people in Palestine and the Zionist movement of the world, who, following directions from the United Nations General Assembly, met and issued a Declaration of Israel’s Independence on May 14, 1948.
“There are many people of Jewish descent in Pennsylvania, and this is an opportunity for those of us serving in the House to recognize the founding of an independent Jewish state as an important event in the development and growth of a culture,” Leach said. “Israel was the birthplace of the Jewish people, and despite Jewish exile, the land has remained the place where our religious, spiritual and national identity was formed.”
More than 4.7 million Jews make up 80 percent of the population in Israel. The young state has emerged as a successful democracy with a strong economy and a powerful military, despite difficult times filled with social unrest.
