Briggs, Appropriations Committee send state spending plan to full House for vote

HARRISBURG, March 8 – State Rep. Tim Briggs, D-Montgomery, today said the House Appropriations Committee approved a budget package for 2010-11 that reflects the governor’s spending plan and includes $29 billion in General Fund spending.

Briggs said the budget (H.B. 2279) will now go to the full House for consideration where he hopes his colleagues will continue the momentum of this year's budget process to avoid an impasse like previous years.

"If we continue to move at this pace, we could potentially have a budget passed out of the House and to the Senate for consideration by the end of the month," Briggs said. "I have been pushing to get the process moving quickly and to begin crucial negotiations sooner. If we can pass the state budget early this year we can avoid the issues of last year’s impasse like funding cut-offs and interruptions to much-needed social services.

"As budget discussions begin, I will continue to be a strong advocate for the priorities that I have focused on since I took office: investing in our children’s education, protecting our must vulnerable citizens and protecting the environment," he added.
