Briggs, Leach host Junior Optimist Club in Harrisburg

HARRISBURG, March 17 – State Rep. Tim Briggs, D-Montgomery, and state Sen. Daylin Leach, D-Delaware/Montgomery, today welcomed members of the Upper Merion Junior Optimist Club to the state Capitol.

Briggs said the Junior Optimist Club is a unique service organization that provides opportunities for middle school students in grades five to eight to give back to their community and their school. The group's activities include operation of the Upper Merion school store, a talent show, a craft fair, food drives, clean-ups and school beautification, community fairs and other fundraisers.

"It was an honor to spend time with this great group here in the Capitol," Briggs said. "They recited the Pledge of Allegiance on the House floor so enthusiastically that not only was I impressed, but so was Speaker of the House Keith McCall.

"I would encourage all young people in my district and in Pennsylvania to get involved with organizations like the Junior Optimists," he added. "Between schoolwork, friends, sports and family, the middle school years can seem overwhelming, but getting involved in activities like an optimist club with new people is a fun way for young people to challenge themselves."

Briggs said the Junior Optimists hold sign-ups for the club every fall. However, students can join during any monthly meeting throughout the year.
