Leach uses green thumb to vote for environment
PHILADELPHIA, July 22 – The environmental group PennEnvironment recognized state Rep. Daylin Leach, D-Montgomery, at Philadelphia City Hall on Monday for receiving a perfect score on its report card.
PennEnvironment – a statewide, citizen-based environmental advocacy organization -- releases statewide and national scorecards annually tracking how legislators vote on environmental issues, such as promotion of alternative energy, protection of air and water purity, and the reduction of global warming. Leach was among six southeastern Pennsylvania lawmakers and 13 statewide who were praised by the group for their environmental voting records.
"I believe that too often, the protection of natural resources gets thrown to the wayside for whatever is more convenient and cheaper in the short term," Leach said. "The legislature has the ability to enact laws that prevent that carelessness and safeguard irreplaceable assets for generations to come.
"I am honored that PennEnvironment has recognized me for prioritizing clean and renewable energy, conservation and efficiency, and many other proposals that have been introduced in the legislature," he said. "Their efforts underscore the importance Pennsylvanians put on the environment."
Leach has introduced several environmentally friendly bills, including one that would encourage the use of energy-saving light bulbs and another that would give school districts incentives to construct cleaner and more efficient schools. Both bills have passed the House of Representatives.
The votes included on the PennEnvironment scorecard involved issues such as public transportation funding, clean energy, open space preservation, energy efficiency, fossil fuels and wind energy.
