ABINGTON, May 23 – State Rep. Josh Shapiro, D-Montgomery, has been named one of the "40 under 40" by the Philadelphia Business Journal for his contributions to the greater Philadelphia region as a legislator.

Shapiro, 34, addressed the awards ceremony on Thursday at the Sheraton Society Hill.

"I am extremely proud to be honored as one of the region’s young leaders," Shapiro said. "Ever since I began my career on Capitol Hill in Washington, I have been focused on making government more transparent and accountable. I look forward to continuing the work I have begun and working with the other leaders being honored to make our region a better place to raise our families."

The "40 Under 40" awards highlight exceptional achievements by up-and-coming leaders in the Philadelphia area. More than 600 business executives and young professionals are expected to attend the ceremony. Winners also will be featured in an issue of the Philadelphia Business Journal for their achievements.

Shapiro, who also serves as deputy speaker of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives, was first elected in 2004. Since then, he has established himself as a leader of the reform movement in Harrisburg, co-chairing the Speaker’s Commission on Reform that enacted the first major reforms to House procedures in a generation.

As a legislator, Shapiro has authored several bills that were enacted into law, including plans to make college more affordable for students and their families. For his achievements and leadership, he has been named the "Best State Legislator" by Philadelphia Magazine.
