Shapiro and Blackwell call on SEPTA to reverse unfair surcharge policy
HARRISBURG, Oct. 2 – Today state Rep. Josh Shapiro, D-Montgomery, and Rep. Thomas Blackwell, D-Phila., sent a letter to SEPTA General Manager Faye Moore urging the transit authority to reverse its new unfair policy to make riders pay a surcharge on onboard ticket sales.
Recently, SEPTA officials announced that riders would have to pay up to a $1.50 surcharge on all tickets purchased on trains even if the station of origin for the rider did not have a ticket office or machine.
In the letter, Shapiro and Blackwell wrote, “We do not feel these riders should be made to pay an unfair surcharge. At a time when we are trying to encourage more people to ride mass transit, this sends the wrong message.”
Shapiro is the deputy speaker of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives and represents the 153rd Legislative District in Montgomery County. Blackwell is a member of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives and represents the 190th Legislative District in Philadelphia.
