Corbett presents a 'bait and switch' budget

'No tax' promise will amount to middle class tax shift

HARRISBURG, March 8 – State Rep. Lawrence Curry released the following statement on Gov. Tom Corbett's proposed 2011/12 state budget:

"Gov. Corbett promised not to raise taxes to balance the state budget. What he offered today was a 'bait and switch' budget that will continue tax breaks for corporations and shift the burden of paying for necessary services to the middle class.

"Corbett called on teachers and middle class families to sacrifice, but he did not ask big business to make any sacrifices to ensure our children have a quality education, or that our senior citizens and the disabled have the services they need to survive.

"There was plenty of talk about cutting state spending, and cutting state jobs. But there was no talk of imposing a severance fee on out-of-state drilling companies currently profiting from our Marcellus Shale natural gas reserve.

"If we are all called upon to 'share the pain' of this austere budget, then everyone should also pay their fair share," said Curry, D-Montgomery/Phila.
