Curry resolution honors libraries

Measure designates April 13-19 as National Library Week

HARRISBURG, April 1 – The state House of Representatives has adopted a resolution (H.R. 593) introduced by state Rep. Lawrence Curry, D-Montgomery, that designates April 13-19 as National Library Week in Pennsylvania and honors the American Library  Association on its celebration of the 50th anniversary of National Library Week.

"The theme of this year’s National Library Week is ‘Join the Circle of Knowledge,’ illustrating how knowledge comes full circle at the library," Curry said. "Libraries are a place to learn, explore and grow. They are also a place where people can take time out from their hectic lives and enjoy a bit of quiet solitude for reflection and relaxation."

National Library Week was first sponsored by the American Library Association in 1958 and is held each April.

Pennsylvania and other states use National Library Week as an opportunity to promote literacy, diversity, education, continuous learning, equity of access and intellectual freedom. Many libraries display tools for parents to encourage family reading, provide training to encourage reading in the home and reading to kids, and offer computer and/or Internet "teach-ins" for people of all ages, including how to log on, conduct a search, use online databases and navigate the Internet safely.
