JENKINTOWN, May 6 – State Rep. Lawrence H. Curry, D-Montgomery/Phila., has been named to the National Conference of State Legislatures’ Committee on Education for the 2009-10 legislative session of the Pennsylvania General Assembly.
The appointment was made by House Speaker Keith R. McCall.
Curry serves on the House Education Committee and is also Subcommittee chairman on Higher Education. Curry’s appointment was based on his longstanding commitment to education issues, both as a legislator and in his previous professional career as a professor of history at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia.
"It is both an honor and privilege to be selected to serve with this prestigious organization," Curry said. "The National Conference of State Legislatures gives us an important opportunity to work closely with colleagues in other states who are facing similar challenges – as a result, we can shorten our own learning curve exponentially in terms of what works best in improving our own educational systems.
"Groundwork done at the National Conference of State Legislatures has helped shape a number of positive reforms taking place in Pennsylvania and elsewhere," Curry said. "I am looking forward to the chance to be even more actively engaged in finding solutions to the significant challenges facing us as we try to help our young citizens develop and learn."
The NCSL Education Committee has jurisdiction over a variety of education issues, including early childhood education, K-12 reform efforts, higher education, the federal No Child Left Behind Act, the Higher Education Act, school violence, special education, teachers, school finance and adequacy.
