Curry announces scholarship opportunity for high school seniors

JENKINTOWN, Dec. 17 – State Rep. Lawrence Curry, D-Montgomery/Phila., has announced that applications for the 2010-11 Pennsylvania House of Representatives Scholarship are now available online.

The scholarship is open to college-bound high school seniors who plan to attend a Pennsylvania college, university or career school full-time. Two high school seniors will receive scholarships equivalent to one semester's tuition at a State System of Higher Education university – about $2,500. The scholarship may be renewed for each of a student's four years of undergraduate study.

"This scholarship program can be very helpful to students and their parents trying to afford college tuition, and I am encouraging our area high school seniors to participate," Curry said.

To qualify, students must have a 3.0 grade-point average, display leadership and commitment to their community, and exhibit financial need. Applicants are also scored based on an essay on the following topic: William Penn’s role in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and its representative government.

The deadline to apply is March 1, 2010. Applications are available online at www.pahousescholarship.com.

Students who receive the scholarship also may be eligible to receive matching funds from SAGE Scholars Inc. and the Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency’s PATH Program.

The House Scholarship is privately funded by individual and corporate donations. No tax dollars or other public funds are used.
