McIlvaine Smith announces more than $81,000 in state grants to promote local recycling

HARRISBURG, June 3 – State Rep. Barb McIlvaine Smith, D-Chester, announced that two Chester County communities will be sharing in more than $81,000 from the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection for their efforts in promoting recycling.

West Goshen Township will receive a $66,801 DEP Recycling Performance Grant for recycling 3,094 tons in 2006. East Bradford Township is receiving a $15,018 DEP Recycling Performance Grant for recycling 891 tons in 2006.

"The state's Recycling Performance Grant program serves as an incentive for communities to increase the amount of materials recovered through recycling," McIlvaine Smith said. "Recycling is not only important for our environmental health, but it is also important for our economic growth."

Pennsylvania’s recycling industry includes more than 3,240 recycling and reuse businesses and generates $18.4 billion in gross annual sales. It provides jobs for more than 81,000 people. More information about Pennsylvania’s recycling efforts is available online at www.depweb.state.pa.us.
