McIlvaine Smith bill increasing special education funding

moving forward in the House

HARRISBURG, June 11 – Legislation introduced by state Rep. Barb McIlvaine Smith, D-Chester, that would increase state funding for special education was approved by the House Education Committee today.

House Bill 2440 proposes a 3 percent, or $30 million, increase in special education funding for all of Pennsylvania's 501 school districts in the 2008-09 budget, for a total of $1.04 million.

"When children with special needs are given every opportunity to learn and grow in school, there is a better chance they will become active, productive members of their communities," McIlvaine Smith said.

House Bill 2440 has received bipartisan support in the House.
