Kirkland introduces bill to name road in honor of local judge
HARRISBURG, March 9 – State Rep. Thaddeus Kirkland, D-Delaware, has introduced legislation that would rename the Concord Road to the Judge Robert A. Wright Road in Chester City, Delaware County.
Kirkland said the legislation (H.B. 2303) would recognize Wright as a native son of Chester County who broke racial barriers by becoming the first African-American man to serve in the Delaware County District Attorney's office and on the Delaware County Court of Common Pleas.
Wright graduated from Temple Law School and was appointed to the court in 1970. He was elected to his first 10-year term in 1971.
"I want Judge Wright to be remembered as a learned jurist who combined integrity and compassion with his strong knowledge of the law, always reaching a fair and just result,"
Kirkland said.
Kirkland said in 1989, Wright was appointed to a senior status on the court until 2003, when he was named a court conciliator. In 1992, Wright swore in his son Robert C. Wright to the bench.
Wright received the Donald J. Orlowsky Award from the Delaware County Bar Association and the Delaware County Chamber of Commerce Lifetime Award. After a distinguished 45-year law career, Wright retired in 1989 and passed away this year at age 90.
Kirkland is hopeful the legislation will be considered in the House Transportation Committee.
