Kirkland/Wheatley basketball match-up spurs competition
HARRISBURG, March 23 – State Reps. Thaddeus Kirkland, D-Delaware, and Jake Wheatley, D-Allegheny, are showing their competitive nature, not at the state Capitol but on the basketball court because both of their hometown district high school teams are playing in a championship game this weekend at the Bryce Jordan Center, Penn State University.
Kirkland is chairman of the Subcommittee on Basic Education for the House Education Committee and Wheatley is chairman of the House Appropriation Committee's Subcommittee on Education. Both legislators have a special interest in making sure that Pennsylvania’s children obtain a quality education in order in compete in today’s school curriculum and sporting activities.
Kirkland’s basketball team, Chester, was the District 1 champion and has a record of 28-5, and Wheatley’s basketball team is Schenley, the District 8 champion, with a 28-3 record. The two teams will face each other, setting up some good-spirited rivalry between the legislators.
Both high school basketball teams are vying for the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association AAAA basketball title.
Kirkland and Wheatley have clothing and food wagers in the works.
“When Chester wins then Representative Wheatley has to wear Chester school colors which are black and orange, and give me hoagies and fries from the Famous Primanti Brothers,” Kirkland said.
Wheatley, however, doesn’t plan to lose.
“Representative Kirkland should get ready to wear the Schenley school colors of red and black, and bring me the famous hoagies from Furillio’s in Chester,” Wheatley said. “It is wonderful for our children, families and communities to see these young men compete, and no matter if they win or lose, the value of this experience will last throughout their lifetime.”
Wheatley said the losing legislator will have to wear the school’s colors and supply the food when the winning high school team is honored at the state Capitol in the near future.
Kirkland and Wheatley said the game begins at 8 p.m. Saturday. They wish both teams good luck.
