Kirkland announces $665,556 in federal stimulus funding to fight crime

HARRISBURG, March 24 – State Rep. Thaddeus Kirkland, D-Delaware, has announced that hundreds of thousands of dollars in federal funding is available to four areas in the 159th Legislative District to help pay for a wide range of crime-prevention efforts.

Those four areas are:

·         Chester city - $590,483

·         Eddystone borough - $21,037

·         Trainer borough - $11,756

·         Ridley Township - $42,280

The Delaware County legislator said the funding from the federal stimulus package is being made available through the Brynes/Justice Assistance Grant Program.

Kirkland said the JAG grant program does not require a local match of funding.

"Our local officials would be able to put this funding to good use for a variety of efforts such as keeping our streets safe, hiring law enforcement officers or supporting drug and gang task forces," Kirkland said.

Kirkland said the stimulus package includes almost $2 billion in critical resources for state and local law enforcement and other criminal justice activities through the Recovery JAG program. Municipalities that are eligible for the funding must formally apply for it in order to receive it.

Applications must be submitted by May 18. More information on the federal grants is available online at www.ojp.usdoj.gov/BJA/recoveryJAG/recoveryjag.html.
