Legislative Black Caucus disappointed with judicial nominees

HARRISBURG, May 20 - Members of the Pennsylvania Legislative Black Caucus, chaired by state Rep. Thaddeus Kirkland, D-Delaware, said they were disappointed that Gov. Ed Rendell failed to nominate any minorities for four state Commonwealth, Superior and Supreme Court posts.

Rendell's four nominees were all white men. Last week, the state Senate failed to confirm the nominees. A two-thirds majority of the Senate is required to confirm nominations to the bench made by the governor.

Kirkland said he hopes the governor's next round of judicial nominees will include candidates from the black or Latino communities.

"This state needs to have a more diverse group of judges named to its high courts," Kirkland said. "I hope the governor's future selection of judicial nominees will include judges who are minorities.  All of the people of Pennsylvania need to be fairly represented in our state courts."

The judges being appointed to the Commonwealth, Superior and Supreme courts would serve through 2010.

Kirkland represents constituents in the 159th Legislative District.
