Lentz reacts to passage of 2008-09 state budget

HARRISBURG, July 4 – State Rep. Bryan Lentz, D-Delaware, made the following comments regarding the Pennsylvania House of Representative's approval of a no-tax-increase, $28.2 billion state budget package:

"In a very difficult economic climate, when states all across the nation are cutting services and raising taxes, we held the line on tax increases. At the same time, we increased funding for early childhood education and invested in an energy package that will help protect our environment, and reduce our dependency on foreign oil that lead to "green"-technology jobs.

"There is more to do this fall. We must pass an energy conservation bill that will help consumers save money by using less energy. And we must reform health care so that it becomes more affordable and the hundreds of thousands of Pennsylvanians without insurance are able get coverage.

"We reached the end of an era when gas prices hit $3, let alone $4. In recognition of that, we're investing in home-grown energy. We can’t keep throwing dollars at foreign oil companies and kid ourselves. This is a problem that requires ingenuity and forward-thinking solutions. The energy legislation we enacted today is a great step towards reaching energy independence and driving down energy costs."
