7,500 in Delco eligible but haven’t applied for property tax/rent rebate

Deadline to apply is Dec. 31

HAVERTOWN, Nov. 26 – State Rep. Greg Vitali, D-Delaware, is reminding county residents that the deadline to apply for this year's Property Tax/Rent Rebate Program is Dec. 31.

The program offers a rebate to qualified seniors and certain other residents on their property taxes or rent paid in 2006. The program is funded by the state lottery.

“Under a law the General Assembly passed last year, the income limit for homeowners has more than doubled for this year – to $35,000. That means many more people are eligible for a rebate of up to $650,” Vitali explained. "However, the state estimates that 200,000 residents statewide -- nearly 7,500 in Delaware County alone -- are eligible but have not yet applied.”

Vitali is urging residents to contact their state representative or senator for more information or for help with their application.

Under the program’s expanded eligibility guidelines, the household income limit for homeowners is $35,000. The household income eligibility limit for renters is $15,000. However, Vitali reminded potential applicants that they only need to include half of their Social Security, Supplemental Security Income or federal Railroad Retirement Tier 1 benefits when calculating eligibility.

Eligible homeowners and renters can receive a rebate of $250 to $650. To qualify, residents must be 65 or older, a widow or widower 50 or older, or 18 or older with a permanent disability.

Last year’s participants should have already received this year's application in the mail; residents of the 166th Legislative District who have not applied before or who need help with their applications should contact Vitali's constituent service office at 1001 E. Darby Road, Havertown, or call 610-789-3900.
