House adopts Boyle resolution honoring Mary Jane Hazell

HARRISBURG, Nov. 17 – The state House and Rep. Brendan F. Boyle, D-Phila./Montgomery, today adopted a resolution honoring the life of Mary Jane Hazell, the unofficial "mayor" of Somerton, who died recently at the age of 76.

Boyle proposed the condolence resolution (H.R. 540) to celebrate the achievements and contributions of Hazell as a longtime civic leader in northeast Philadelphia. While speaking on the House floor, Boyle noted that the Northeast Times recently called Hazell "the greatest civic leader in the history of Northeast Philadelphia."

"Mary Jane Hazell forged a reputation as a top-notch activist and highly respected community leader through her hard work and dedication to improving the quality of life for the people and families of Somerton and Northeast Philadelphia," Boyle said. "She was a true public servant, and her efforts have benefited every one of us in Somerton whether we know it or not. She will be missed, but not forgotten."

Boyle said that since joining the Somerton Civic Association in 1966, Hazell worked passionately on practically every relevant proposal and project that affected Somerton. She was president of the civic association for two decades, vice president of the United Northeast Neighbors, a member of the Philadelphia Police Department Advisory Committee for the 7th District for over 20 years, and civic association zoning chairperson for nearly two decades.

As an active mother and grandmother, Hazell was also heavily involved in the local school system and served as president of the home and school associations.
