Boyle announces House of Representatives scholarship program
now accepting applications
HARRISBURG, Dec. 17 – State Rep. Brendan Boyle, D-Phila./Montgomery, today announced that high school seniors can now apply for the 2010-11 Pennsylvania House of Representatives Scholarship.
Boyle said the scholarship is for seniors who plan to attend a Pennsylvania college, university or career school full time. Two high school seniors will receive scholarships equivalent to one semester's tuition at a State System of Higher Education university – about $2,500. The scholarship may be renewed for each of a student's four years of undergraduate study.
"The competition for these two
scholarships will be stiff, but the qualifications are such that almost any of
those who apply and qualify will stand a chance if they put their mind to
it," said Boyle. "And the value of the scholarship is certainly
significant when students and parents look at the cost of higher education
today."
To qualify, students must have a 3.0 grade-point average, display leadership and commitment to their community, and exhibit financial need. Applicants are also scored based on an essay on the following topic: William Penn’s role in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and its representative government.
The deadline to apply is March 1.
Boyle said students can obtain applications by clicking on the "PA House of Representatives Scholarship Program" link on his Web site, www.pahouse.com/boyle, or by contacting his constituent service office at 215-676-0300.
Students who receive the scholarship also may be eligible to receive matching funds from SAGE Scholars Inc. and the Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency’s PATH Program.
The House Scholarship program, now in its sixth year, is privately funded by individual and corporate donations; there are no tax dollars or other public funds involved.
