Sabatina takes oath of office in state House

HARRISBURG, Jan. 6 – State Rep. John Sabatina, D-Phila., said he is proud to begin his second term representing residents of the 174th Legislative District in Philadelphia.

Sabatina took the oath of office today during the House of Representatives' swearing-in ceremony at the state Capitol.

The Philadelphia lawmaker said he will continue working on legislation to strengthen penalties for police assaults and illegal firearms possession.

Sabatina has already authored legislation, which was signed into law, which better protects police and residents. Under the law, first-degree murder of a law enforcement officer now results in a mandatory sentence of life in prison or the death penalty.

"I will do my best to continue working in a bipartisan way so that we can pass more laws that protect police officers and the public from gun violence," Sabatina said.

Sabatina also is an advocate of programs that benefit senior citizens.

"So many of our senior citizens are struggling to make ends meet," Sabatina said. "I want to make sure that our seniors receive some financial relief by continuing to support programs such as the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program and the Property Tax/Rent Rebate Program."

Sabatina is a member of the Philadelphia Delegation.
