O’Brien’s office has applications for Gulf War bonus program
PHILADELPHIA, April 15 – State Rep. Mike O’Brien, D-Phila, said his office has applications for a new program that provides bonuses to veterans who served in the first Persian Gulf War in 1990-91.
O’Brien’s office is located at 610 N. Second St., Philadelphia. The phone number is 215-503-3245.
The program pays veterans $75 per month for each month they served in the war up to a maximum bonus of $525. The program also pays $5,000 to prisoners of war and to the families of troops who died during active service during the Persian Gulf Conflict.
To be eligible for a bonus, a veteran must have served on active duty in the Persian Gulf Theater of Operations between Aug. 2, 1990, and Aug. 31, 1991, and received the Southwest Asia Service Medal; been a legal resident of Pennsylvania during the time of service; and served under honorable conditions.
O’Brien said the bonus program was created by the General Assembly and approved by Pennsylvania voters in 2006. It is similar to other bonus programs the state provided for veterans of World War I, World War II, and the Korean and Vietnam wars.
The deadline to apply for a bonus under the program is Aug. 31, 2015. A link to detailed instructions on how to apply is provided on O’Brien’s Web site, www.pahouse.com/OBrien.
