Payton reacts to governor’s budget address

HARRISBURG, Feb. 5 – State Rep. Tony Payton, D-Phila., issued the following statement in response to the 2008-09 budget proposal that Gov. Ed Rendell introduced today before a joint session of the General Assembly:

Education:

“The additional $86 million Philadelphia School District would receive in basic education funding is definitely a step in the right direction. But I also believe we should use the language from the costing-out study and put a comprehensive funding mechanism in place to distribute education funding fairly and equitably statewide.”

Protecting Our Progress:

“At a time when the nation is bracing for recession, it’s important that we at the state level take a proactive approach to prevent recession in Pennsylvania. The governor has outlined an economic stimulus plan that would put cash in the pockets of working families in Frankford, Hunting Park, Oxford Circle and Feltonville, and that is something I am happy to support.”

Cover All Pennsylvanians:

“While I think we should have enacted the entire Cover All Pennsylvanians package last year, this is a good plan that will use $497.5 million in state and federal funds to cover the uninsured, improve the quality of health care in Pennsylvania and bring down costs for businesses. The people of Pennsylvania shouldn’t have to wait any longer for quality health care.”
