Payton to shoot hoops for upcoming 1-Love sports tournament

PHILADELPHIA, Aug. 17 – State Rep. Tony Payton Jr., D-Phila., will compete in a basketball tournament at an upcoming community event aimed at providing competitive sports activities to Philadelphia teens and adults to keep them active, off the streets and in a positive social environment.

The first 1-Love Group Sports Tournament will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 22 in Wissonoming Park located at Cheltenham Avenue and Charles Street.

"1-Love is a great organization dedicated to developing communication and teamwork in the community, and I am happy to support the launch of their sports tournament," Payton said. "If you don't have plans, come down to the park and join in the fun. Even if you don’t want to participate in the tournament, this is a perfect opportunity to enjoy the summer weather and mingle with our kids and neighbors."

Payton said in addition to basketball and softball tournaments, there will be a free-throw contest, 10-foot dunk contest, three-point shootout, and ball-handling relay race for kids age 7 to 11.

Keystone Mercy will provide free mammograms, screenings, and other health-related sessions for attendees. Food and refreshments will also be available throughout the park.
