Cruz bill would require countdown meters
for intersections with red light surveillance
HARRISBURG, Feb. 2 – State Rep. Angel Cruz, D-Phila., introduced legislation that would require countdown meters at intersections with automated red light enforcement systems.
"There has been a lot of scrutiny about the use of automated red light enforcement in the city of Philadelphia," Cruz said. "My legislation would make the system more dependable by using meters to create a timeline along with photo evidence."
Under the bill (H.B. 2216), countdown meters would be installed at all Philadelphia intersections that utilize automated red light enforcement. The meters would show the time remaining before lights change.
Automated red light enforcement systems are used at the following intersections in the city:
· U.S. Route 1 (Roosevelt Boulevard) at Grant Avenue, Red Lion Road and Cottman Street
· Kensington Avenue at Clearfield Street
· Richmond Street at Allegheny Avenue and Castor Avenue
· Aramingo Avenue at York Street
· Thompson Street at Lehigh Avenue
· Broad Street at Washington Avenue
Cruz said his legislation awaits consideration by the House Transportation Committee.
