House adopts Cruz resolution honoring Hispanic-American soldiers
HARRISBURG, Feb. 6 – State Rep. Angel Cruz, D-Phila., announced that the House unanimously adopted a resolution Wednesday he introduced recognizing the service, courage and patriotism of Hispanic-Americans who have served and continue to serve in the U.S. military.
Cruz said currently there are approximately 1.3 million Hispanic-American veterans nationwide. He added that U.S. Department of Defense data shows that as of August 2006, more than 210,000 Hispanics were serving in the U.S. armed forces and more than 400 have died in conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq as of June 2007.
"Hispanic-Americans have served in every major conflict in this country's rich and storied history," Cruz said. "There have been 42 Hispanic Congressional Medal of Honor recipients for distinguished service, receiving more of these awards than any other ethnic group.
"The contributions of Hispanic-Americans to our nation's armed forces have been largely unrecognized in our history books," he added. "I am grateful for the unanimous support for this resolution from my colleagues in the state House."
