Cruz opposed to Mayor Nutter's proposed tax programs
HARRISBURG, March 5 – State Rep. Angel Cruz, D-Phila., today announced his opposition to Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter's proposal to utilize two new tax programs to balance the city's budget.
The proposed tax programs include a 2-cent-per-ounce levy on sugary drinks, such as soda, and charging property owners $300 a year for trash collection.
Cruz said the proposal unfairly shifts the burden of the city's financial problems to residents.
"Residents are already feeling the pinch from the economic downturn and the mayor's sales tax hike from last year," Cruz said. "At least that increase in the sales tax sunsets after five years – the mayor's new proposals would be permanent."
