Cruz legislation would suspend voter registration for those who fail to vote

HARRISBURG, Sept. 17 – State Rep. Angel Cruz, D-Phila., today introduced legislation (H.B. 1991) that would require periodic checks of voter registries and suspend voter registration for electors who fail to vote.

"Voting is a right and privilege that all United States citizens are entitled to," Cruz said. "Our voter registries should contain the most accurate and up-to-date information available, and my bill would provide a system that accomplishes that."

Under the bill, a check of voter registries would be conducted by April 1 of each year. If a registered voter has not voted in an election in the two immediately preceding calendar years to that date, the commission would be required to send them a notice indicating that their registration will be canceled in 30 days unless they file a written request for reinstatement of their registration.

If the voter would fail to take the necessary steps to reinstate their registration within that 30 day period, the voter registration would be canceled.

Cruz noted, however, that a cancellation of registration for failure to vote would not prevent a voter from being able to obtain voter registration in the future.
