Thomas, House committee will hold public hearing in Erie on Real ID

ERIE, May 15 – State Rep. W. Curtis Thomas, chairman of the House Intergovernmental Affairs Committee, will host the fifth and final public hearing of the committee on the federal Real ID Act from 10 a.m. to noon Thursday, May 22 at Erie City Hall , City Council Chambers, Room 103, 626 State St. in Erie.

Media coverage is invited.

The federal REAL ID Act requires minimum nationwide standards for state drivers’ licenses and non-driver identification cards.

Thomas said about 9 million Pennsylvanians will be affected by Real ID. The hearings are being held to educate state and local government officials and residents about the possible impact of Real ID on Pennsylvanians, and to encourage various agencies to work together so the implementation of Real ID does not create a burden for residents.

Pennsylvania has requested and been granted an extension to comply with the act. Thomas said this will allow stakeholders additional time to analyze the final regulations and take a closer look at the best path for Pennsylvania to comply with the federal mandate.

Additional information on Real ID is available on Thomas' Web site at www.pahouse.com/Thomas.
