Keller urges seniors to apply for Property tax/Rent Rebates now

PHILADELPHIA, June 4 – State Rep. William Keller, D-Phila., is reminding seniors and others who qualify that the deadline to apply for this year’s Property Tax/Rent Rebate Program is June 30.

Under the program’s recently expanded income eligibility guidelines, homeowners who meet other qualifications can have a total household income of up to $35,000 a year and still receive a property tax rebate. The income eligibility limit for renters remains $15,000, but both homeowners and renters can disregard half of their Social Security or federal railroad retirement benefits when calculating income.

“Under the new requirements, you may be eligible for a rebate even though you haven’t been in the past,” Keller said. “I encourage all seniors and people with permanent disabilities to find out if they qualify and submit an application,” Keller said.

In addition to the expanded income eligibility for homeowners, the maximum rebate available to eligible homeowners and renters has increased from $500 to $650.

To qualify for the program, residents must be 65 or older, a widow or widower 50 or older, or 18 or older with a permanent disability.

Homeowners and renters who received a rebate last year should have already received this year’s application in the mail. Those who have not previously applied or who need help with their application should contact Keller’s constituent service office at 1531 S. Second St., Philadelphia.  The phone number is 215-271-9190.
