Donatucci encourages students to apply for House Scholarship

HARRISBURG, Jan. 16 – State Rep. Robert Donatucci, D-Delaware/Phila., announced that applications for the 2008-09 Pennsylvania House of Representatives Scholarship Program are being accepted until April 1.

The program is open to all high school seniors planning to attend any Pennsylvania college, university or career school. Administered by The Foundation for Enhancing Communities, or FEC, the program is not affiliated with any political party and is renewable for up to four years of college. Two scholarships are awarded per year in the amount of one semester at a State System of Higher Education school (approximately $2,500).

“Talented students deserve higher education no matter whether they can afford it,” Donatucci said. “The House scholarship was designed with these students’ futures in mind.”

Scholarship applicants are judged based on an essay, their grades, community service, financial need and extracurricular activities. This year’s essay topic is President Abraham Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address. Students should discuss how the address was influential by articulating the purpose and promise of the American people. Applicants must have at least a 3.0 grade point average.

The FEC will evaluate all applications and may choose to interview the finalists. Applicants will be notified after May 30 with selection results.

Recipients also may be eligible to receive matching funds from Savings and Growth for Education Scholars Inc., and the Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency’s PATH Program based on financial need.

The House program is funded by private, tax-deductible donations, including gifts from former and current House members, as well as proceeds from House-sponsored events.

More information and an application can be found on Donatucci's Web site, www.pahouse.com/donatucci, or at his constituent service office located at 1809 Oregon Ave, Suite 201, Philadelphia. The phone number is 215-468-1515.
