James: emergency food pantry opens today
Pantry open every Monday until food runs out
PHILADELPHIA, May 12 – State Rep. Harold James, D-Phila., announced that starting today, an emergency food pantry will be open from 3:30 p.m. to 4:45 p.m. at the Mt. Zion Pentecostal Church located at 1232 Point Breeze Ave. The pantry will be open every Monday until the food runs out.
To receive food from the pantry, residents must bring proper identification to James’s office at 1440 Point Breeze Ave. between 10:30 a.m. and noon. The office will provide a voucher and residents must take the white form with them to the food pantry, no exceptions.
"Many more families are impacted by rising food prices than ever before," James said. "This food is badly needed, especially for lower-income residents."
James said that the pantry is sponsored by a grant he secured and also by the American Legion Henry Hill Post 385. The food was purchased through the Brown’s family Shop Rite market.
"Thanks to Representative James’ help, this food pantry will help 40 to 50 percent more people than previous ones did," said Billy Denny of Post 385. "We’ve had events before, including clothing drives and welfare-to-work transition, but Representative James was a big help in this effort."
James said the House of Representatives’ Legislative Initiative Program funded the grant, which was distributed through The Greater Philadelphia Urban Affairs Coalition.
